Why should I treasure Christ?
1. Because Christ is the most valuable treasure. (Matthew 13:44-45)
2. Because Christ is to be worshipped above all. (Colossians 1:15-20)
3. Because exchanging Christ for anything else is idolatry. (Romans 1:23)
“The created universe is all about glory. The deepest longing of the human heart and the deepest meaning of heaven and earth are summed up in this: the glory of God. The universe was made to show it, and we were made to see is and savor it. Nothing less will do. Which is why the world is as disordered and as dysfunctional as it is. We have exchanged the glory of God for other things.” - John Piper
4. Because idols can only be displaced by Christ.
Thomas Chalmers, “The Expulsive Power of a New Affection” “In a word, if the way to disengage the heart from the positive love of one great and ascendant object is to fasten it in a positive love to another, then it is not by exposing the worthlessness of the former, but by addressing to the mental eye the worth and excellence of the latter, that all old things are to be done away, and all things are to become new.”
5. Because Christ alone can lastingly rivet an unfeeling heart with affection.
6. Because treasuring Christ is the only way to kill the sin that is killing you.
Some of you are getting killed by sin right now.
7. Because he treasured you even when you were untreasurable.
8. Because that is what we will do for all eternity. (Revelation 5:9-13)
Benediction
And now, may He who is before all things,
and for whom all things exist,
He who is worthy of all worship,
And gracious in redemption
May He be the treasure of our hearts
And the delight of our souls
Amen!
