For a pastor, Monday morning emails responding to the sermon are usually the type that makes you want to quit.  A few weeks back I received one from one of our MC leaders, Josh Duren, that reminded me why I love our church family!  Josh offered some correction to a part of my sermon.  I wanted to share part of it with the Missio family because it is super helpful, a good correction, and a stellar example of seeing everything through a gospel lens.

I talked about “Sin Mortification in Missional Perspective” during my sermon on Hebrews 12:1-2.  It is the idea that we need to put sin to death because it hurts and hinders our witness to the gospel.  Then I asked people to share with me why I shouldn’t look at porn this week (or any week!).  There were some great answers including:

  • You are supporting the industry of sex slavery
  • It’s extremely damaging because the Bible talks about sexual sin being destruction
  • It’s like divorcing your wife and ruining your family
  • It can destroy generations of family through bad example
  • It’s not the way God intended it to be
  • Consequences are certain not probable
  • You won’t be bold in witness when bogged down by guilt and shame

All these show how porn would devastate our gospel witness and take us out of the race of faith.  However, Josh wisely brought up that in addition to knowing these catastrophes that will befall porn-lookers, we even more need to be reminded of the gospel reasoning against porn, for only that will  ”leave you encouraged to run because of what Christ has done on the cross, the freedom He gave you to run in the resurrection, and the power that you have to run in the Holy Spirit.”

So true!  We don’t just need to hear the consequences of sin, but the riches of the gospel.  Josh went on to add this True Storied bomb…

God is the perfect creator and was completely satisfied in what he had done in creation, He created us to be completely satisfied in Him.  Sin came into the world when we thought something else could offer more satisfaction.  God chose an innocent sacrifice so that we didn’t have to suffer the punishment for what we deserved, gave us a community of people to remind us of this daily because we continue to be deceived that there is some greater satisfaction, and promises one day that He is going to perfect us so that we can understand that He is the ultimate satisfaction!

Example from the Word:

Adam and Eve // God created them and was satisfied with His work of creation, gave them everything to be satisfied in Him, they were deceived into thinking the fruit might make them even more satisfied, He sent them out of the garden to live outside of His perfection, He killed an innocent animal so they could have clothes, so they wouldn’t be ashamed of what THEY did.

Great stuff.  I am thankful for leaders like Josh who continually push us into further depths of gospel-saturation.  I’ll take corrections like that all day long!
